Attendance
This school year, we’re making a shared commitment to showing up, staying engaged, and building a brighter future—one school day at a time!
Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new, take a step toward your goals, and shape the future you envision. When students are in school every day, they build the knowledge, skills, and habits they will need to succeed now and in the years ahead.
Missing just two days a month adds up to 10% of the school year, enough to significantly impact academic performance at any grade level. In fact:
- Poor attendance in early grades can affect reading proficiency by the end of 3rd grade.
- Students who are chronically absent by 6th grade are far less likely to graduate from high school.
- Regular attendance in all grades, from kindergarten through senior year, is a key predictor of long-term academic success.
Come to School Ready to Learn
While it’s important to stay home if you’re feeling sick, students who are healthy should be in class, participating and learning. Every day in the classroom counts toward a strong academic foundation and a successful future.
At Del Valle ISD, we are committed to helping every student show up and thrive. Families, with your support, we can make consistent attendance a priority across our school community.
Tips for Building Strong Attendance Habits
Small, proactive steps can make a big difference in keeping students on track:
- Establish consistent bedtime and morning routines to start each day smoothly.
- Plan backup transportation options to avoid missing school when unexpected issues arise.
- Schedule doctor visits and family trips outside of school hours whenever possible.
- Keep track of your child’s attendance and stay in communication with their teacher.
- Talk regularly with your student about the importance of showing up—let them know it’s your expectation.
Absence Reporting
Please provide the following information in a note or via email for your child's absence to be considered excused:
- FIRST and LAST name
- Grade & Student ID Number (if known)
- Date of Absence(s)
- Reason for Absence
- Parent's Name and Contact Information
Please allow a minimum of 3 school days for your campus attendance clerk to update your student's attendance record.
Compulsory Attendance
Pre-K and kindergarten students are subject to compulsory school attendance while they are enrolled in school. On enrollment in pre-K or kindergarten, a child must attend school. However, if a child has not reached mandatory compulsory attendance age (six years old as of September 1 of the current school year), the child’s parent or guardian may withdraw the student from school, and the child will not be in violation of compulsory attendance.
Unless specifically exempted by the TEC, §25.086, a child who is at least six years of age or younger than six years of age and has previously been enrolled in first grade, and who has not yet reached his or her 19th birthday, must attend school. A person who voluntarily enrolls in or attends school after turning 19 years of age is also required to attend school each day.
