Popham ES Principal Jennifer Spears was named a recipient of the 2024 Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA). The organization has awarded the scholarship annually since 2014 to outstanding doctoral students pursuing careers in educational leadership, with emphasis on the superintendency.

Principal Spears was selected from among a pool of applicants by the TASA Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship Committee, a group of superintendents and public school district administrators. As a recipient, Principal Spears will receive a $2,500 scholarship and will be recognized at the 2024 TASA Midwinter Conference in Austin this coming month.

Principal Spears is currently working on her doctorate from the University of Texas Cooperative Superintendency Program.

"As a Hispanic female, I want to be a role model for all students. I want my students to view themselves as capable leaders in society," she wrote in her application. "As a future superintendent, I aim to positively impact students' lives by showing commitment and loyalty to my community's needs. Working with my community was the reason that led to my interest in the superintendency."

The scholarship recognizes the leadership of Dr. Johnny L. Veselka, who dedicated nearly 44 years of service to the association, including 32 years as TASA’s executive director.

TASA is the professional association for Texas school superintendents and other administrators. The mission of the organization, which focuses on professional learning, advocacy, and member engagement, is to promote, provide, and develop leaders who create and sustain student-centered schools and develop future-ready students.
