The Del Valle ISD Board of Trustees approved two pivotal leadership hires during a Special Board Meeting on Saturday, Nov. 16, based on the recommendation of Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez. Dr. Mark Cantu has been named Deputy Superintendent, and Stephen Gonzalez will serve as Chief Technology Officer.

Dr. Mark Cantu: Deputy Superintendent

As Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Cantu will assist Dr. Gutierrez in overseeing all district operations, serving as the district’s second-in-command. His responsibilities include leading all divisions, making critical decisions in collaboration with district leadership, and acting as Superintendent in Dr. Gutierrez’s absence. A key focus of his role will be guiding the development and implementation of a new district strategic plan.

Dr. Cantu brings a wealth of experience in educational leadership and district improvement. He currently serves as Director of the Center for Effective Districts at Educational Service Center Region 20, where he works with districts statewide on strategic planning and leadership development. He previously held several key leadership roles at San Antonio ISD and Seguin ISD, including Deputy Superintendent, Chief Innovation Officer, Chief Academic Officer, Chief of Staff, and School Improvement Officer. Earlier in his career, Dr. Cantu was a middle school English Language Arts teacher and principal, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to student success.

“Dr. Cantu is a proven leader with a passion for empowering schools and advancing student achievement,” said Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez. “His expertise in planning and leadership development will greatly benefit Del Valle ISD as we work to strengthen our district for all students.”

Stephen Gonzalez: Chief Technology Officer

Stephen Gonzalez will lead the district’s technology initiatives as Chief Technology Officer, overseeing all aspects of technology planning, infrastructure, and classroom integration. Currently serving as Chief Technology Officer at Seguin ISD, Gonzalez has extensive experience in digital learning and Career and Technical Education (CTE). He has worked closely with curriculum leaders to integrate innovative technology into classrooms, enhancing student learning experiences and preparing them for the future.

“Stephen Gonzalez is more than a technology leader—he is a leader of innovation and opportunity,” said Dr. Gutierrez. “In today’s rapidly changing digital landscape, his vision and expertise will help Del Valle ISD evolve and create transformative learning experiences for our students.”

Both leaders will officially join Del Valle ISD after the Thanksgiving break. Filling these leadership positions marks a dynamic time for DVISD to fuel the development of innovative programs and pave the way for student success.
