Del Valle High School Senior Awarded $48,000 Scholarship at UT

Del Valle High School Senior, Rahel Bekele received quite the surprise Thursday morning--a four-year $48,000 scholarship to the University of Texas. Representatives from UT paid a visit to Del Valle High School to share the good news with Bekele who plans on studying mechanical engineering.

“Over 60,000 people have applied to the University, for freshman admission for the fall of 2022 and of that, we have awarded 60 or so students across the state of Texas with this award. So, it’s a pretty small group of students that we’ve identified as Impact scholars, so it’s really quite an honor,” said Caroline Enriquez with the Office of Admissions UT.

The impact scholarship is awarded to students who are making an impact in their communities. UT representatives say that Bekele is a very driven young lady who is also passionate about the education of young women.  

“I’m overwhelmed with emotions and to make my parents proud like this. This means a lot to me,” Bekele said.
