Two Del Valle ISD elementary school counselors were recently selected as CREST award winners by the Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA).

Creedmoor ES counselor Cheyenne Koerth and Newton Collins ES counselor Corey Hume were chosen as award recipients, marking a significant recognition for the district as it now has not one, but two highly recognized counselors.

The TSCA awards the distinction to counselors who have demonstrated a commitment to using the Texas Model to improve the lives and achievement of students in academic, career, and personal roles. CREST submissions are evaluated through five categories, ultimately focusing on what the program is doing to help students succeed. The submission is reviewed by judges across the state and examined according to pre-set standards of excellence.

“I was thrilled. I think our students deserve award-winning counseling so I was really excited that the State of Texas is recognizing us as a campus that really puts mental health first,” Cheyenne said.

Cheyenne has been with DVISD for more than 10 years, starting as an after-school teacher at Hornsby-Dunlap ES. This is now her fourth year as a counselor at Creedmoor ES. She leads small group instruction, provides individual services, and also has monthly guidance lessons for all students.

“What I’m really passionate about is teaching kids they have a voice and that they are important and that they are allowed to take up space and express themselves, be who they are, and grow into the best version of themselves,” Cheyenne said.

Corey also has more than 10 years of experience in the district and has served as the counselor at Newton Collins ES for most of her time in DVISD. She said the most important part of her job is teaching students how to regulate their emotions and resolve conflicts effectively.

“My favorite thing is, of course, working with the kids. So it’s really great to see them grow over the years. We work hard to help kids build the critical skills they need for life,” Corey said.

We’re proud to celebrate these two counselors for earning this prestigious distinction along with all of our amazing counselors during National School Counseling Week! Thank you for all you do to help our students succeed in their daily lives.
