School Health Advisory Council

Del Valle ISD School health Advisory Council

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is a volunteer advisory group that collectively acts to provide recommendations to the Del Valle ISD School Board. The council’s purpose is to ensure community values, and local health issues are reflected in the District’s health education policies and instructions.

The work of SHAC is carried out by its committees, which include: Family & Community Involvement, Nutrition, Physical Education & Activity, Health Education, Social & Emotional Wellness, Health Services, Healthy and safe School Environment, and Health Promotion for Staff Wellness.

It is the Texas Law that every public-school district establishes and maintain a School Health Advisory Council. Membership is comprised of parents, district staff, community agency representatives, professionals, and students. By law, most of the council members must be parents.

SHAC Vision & Mission Statement

The vision of the DVISD SHAC is for parents, employees and community members to work together to evaluate school health then provide recommendations that result in the Board of Trustees taking positive actions regarding health issues in the Del Valle community

SHAC Mission

The Del Valle SHAC’s mission statement reflects the school district’s motto,  “Do ‘Whatever It Takes’ to address health-related issues within the Del Valle educational system and the surrounding community.”

The goals of the Del Valle SHAC are to:

  • Perform ongoing assessments of the eight areas of coordinated school health

  • Help ensure the success of programs designed to prevent obesity, cardiovascular disease, and Type II diabetes in the district’s student and employee population

District Wellness Policy (view policy regulations HERE)

In 2017, the SHAC developed regulations on the implementation of the District’s Wellness Policy, FFA(LOCAL).  The new wellness policy regulations promote healthy nutrition and fitness activities for students, staff and parents during school instruction time and afterschool events. The District will be partnering with the Austin Junior League, Common Threads nutrition promotion program, Austin Public Health and other resources to promote health and wellness in the Del Valle ISD community.  See additional resource links for implementation of wellness activities below!
