While Del Valle Middle School teachers and staff are focused on taking care of students, the school’s counseling team wanted to make sure staff is taken care of as well. DVMS Counselors Alexis Baker and Diana Birdsong created a calming room on campus for teachers and staff to use for the remainder of the school year. Included in the room are a sound machine, essential oil diffuser, low lighting, comfortable leather chairs that can easily be wiped down after use, bottled water, a Keurig and an electric kettle for hot tea and cocoa.

With boot camps, STAAR testing season, and the end of the school year approaching quickly, the counselors decided to create the small retreat for staff. The goal for the room is to give staff a place to go, as needed, where they can clear their minds and breathe during a busy time of year. When teachers and staff are cared for, staff takes even better care of our students.

“The calming room is a phenomenal idea. I used it during my break and it was a revitalizing experience,” 6th Grade Teacher, Brent Gonzales said.

“This school year has not been an easy year for our teachers, but they keep pushing through for our students. We are so proud of their effort and we hope that they take advantage of this space,” DVMS Assistant Principal Anthony DeFrancisis said.
