Del Valle ISD names new principal for Del Valle HS

The Del Valle ISD Board of Trustees approved hiring Ameka Hunt as the new principal of Del Valle High School. Ms. Hunt will join DVISD after the current school year is complete. She currently serves as principal at Pflugerville High School.

Ms. Hunt is a seasoned educator and high school leader with nearly 20 years of high school administrator experience. She is long-tenured at Pflugerville serving as first an assistant principal, then associate principal from 2003-2017, and principal since 2017. Before her time at Pflugerville, Ms. Hunt was a Spanish teacher at James Bowie High School in Austin ISD from 1997-2003.

To Del Valle, she brings exceptional organizational, communication, and leadership skills, with demonstrated success in behavior management techniques, innovative interventions, and professional development that improves student academic performance.

“Ameka Hunt is a strong instructional leader with an impressive track record of providing support for all students,” said Superintendent Dr. Annette Tielle, “We are looking forward to welcoming Ameka to DVHS and excited to see our students grow under her leadership.”

Ms. Hunt earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and Spanish from Texas State University and her master’s degree in educational leadership from UT San Antonio.

Del Valle ISD names new principal for Ojeda Middle School

The Del Valle ISD Board of Trustees approved hiring Kandice Smith as the new principal of Ojeda Middle School. Ms. Smith joins Ojeda after serving as Associate Principal at Del Valle High School for the past 2 years.

Ms. Smith brings 10 years of DVISD experience to her new role as Principal. Prior to her time as Associate Principal at DVHS, she was an Assistant Principal. Her educational career started at Dailey Middle School as a technology teacher assistant, teacher, and coach.

At DVHS she coordinated hiring, course selection, master scheduling, and developing campus performance goals and objectives. She brings a strong work ethic and rapport with students to Ojeda.

“Kandice is a devoted academic leader to our district,” said Superintendent Dr. Annette Tielle, “Her development as an educator is all within DVISD and we are excited to see her lead Ojeda in this new role.”

“I look forward to getting to know the Ojeda students, staff, and families,” said Ms. Smith, “I am thrilled for this new opportunity to contribute to developing young minds and preparing them for high school and beyond.”

Ms. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science from Huston-Tillotson University and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Texas State University. She is currently working toward her doctorate at Texas A&M University.
