Families in the community around Newton Collins Elementary School have a new “Little Locker Library” to pick up free books, art supplies, and crafts. The Austin YES! Foundation, with support from Todd Hart, provided the library for DVISD families. The locker box is in the front yard of the school, next to the school garden area.

The box is full of English and Spanish children’s books and crafts. The community is invited to stop by and pick up a book to read. Like other “Little Libraries,” users are asked to return the book when finished and donate books for other families to pick up.

“Our students will love being able to select books from this library and being able to add their books to it,” said Amy Gonzalez, Collins Librarian, “I can’t thank Austin YES and Todd Hart enough for gifting this Little Free Library to us.”

The “Little Locker” will also contain books for children that teaches them to express their emotions, how to cope with anxiety, social skills, and meditation. This endeavor is the first of its kind for Austin YES!, and the organization hopes to continue to expand their reach throughout Austin, San Antonio and Corpus Christi. The organization hopes these resources can help students, teachers and parents know the importance of discussing mental health.

Over the next year, AUSTIN YES has goals of refilling the Little Locker with the supplies the community needs the most at any given time.
