Katia Kinchion, a junior at Del Valle High School, was featured on CBS Austin news in recognition of her work as a young community leader for the local nonprofit, B.R.A.V.E. Communities. B.R.A.V.E. stands for building relationships, awareness, voices, and engagement in local communities. Their mission is to empower and amplify the voices of the marginalized so that Austin can become a more just, equitable, and inclusive community.

With student ambassadors, like Katia, the group organizes monthly meal kit distributions and helps people register to vote. For Katia, being part of the nonprofit is also about showing the students and staff at DVHS how to step up and give back.

“I wanted to be a BRAVE ambassador because I wanted to surround myself with people who wanted to make effective change in our community,” Katia said, “It’s a great opportunity. We create digital campaigns using social media that teach people about the census, and help people register to vote.”
