To recognize Black History Month, Del Valle High School art teacher Beranger LeFranc created a Black artists’ directory. Using the listings, she hopes to increase student knowledge and exposure to Black visual artists. The directory includes listings of artist websites and social media channels to spark classroom discussion and build inspiration for students.
She also shared the resource with secondary art, social studies, and English teachers across Del Valle ISD to provide an opportunity for cross-curricular learning.
“Viewing art can be empowering because every work of art reflects an artist’s interpretation of his or her reality,” LeFranc said. “Teachers can help guide their students to make powerful connections between works of art and historical events or written texts.”
