Newton Collins Elementary School students virtually met with two award-winning authors as part of the 2020 Reading Rock Stars program, sponsored by the Texas Book Festival. Students in Pre-K through 2nd grade met Gianna Ruggiero, illustrator of Every Night is Pizza Night. Students in 3rd through 5th grade met Isabel Quintero, author of My Papi Has a Motorcycle, and the book’s illustrator, Zeke Peña. The visits took place via Zoom.

Students enjoyed asking Gianna, Isabel, and Zeke questions about their writing and art and how the process of creating their books. Each student received a free, autographed copy of one of the author’s books.

“I absolutely love being a part of this program, and I’m thankful the Texas Book Festival was still willing to offer it to us virtually,” said Collins Elementary librarian Amy Gonzalez, “There is nothing like the excitement and happiness in our students’ eyes as they get to meet their author and illustrator and receive their free, autographed copy of their books. It’s a special day they never forget.”
