While the routine parts of the school year have taken a different look in 2020, the partnership between Del Valle ISD and Austin YES continued with the same focus on ensuring students have what they need to learn. This year, with assistance from DVISD Curriculum and Instruction, Transportation, Custodial, and Operations teams, boxes full of supplies are again in the hands of Del Valle students.
Austin YES is a nonprofit organization that provides Title 1 elementary school students, kindergarten through fifth grade, with the school supplies they need to start the school year off right as part of the Back to Basics Project. This is the third year the organization has worked with Del Valle.
This year, the organization provided 3,462 supply kits that the district distributed alongside meal pickup and registration. The kits contain colored pencils, crayons, notebook paper, erasers, glue, folders, pencils, a ruler, ballpoint pens, and a box of tissues. Although the distribution looked different this year, elementary school students were excited to know that once again, they would be receiving their “pizza boxes” of materials.
“When students have what they need to be successful, they are more confident and motivated to succeed. We enjoy working with Del Valle ISD as they are gracious and we want to ensure that the students here do not get overlooked,” said Danielle Gunter, Executive Director of Austin YES.
