On May 18, Del Valle Middle School (DVMS) utilized distance learning concepts to launch a virtual Spring career fair website for students. DVMS counselors Alexis Baker and Diana Birdsong recruited 44 industry professionals, from within the Austin area and expanding across the country, to participate in the fair.
Each selected professional submitted a video for the career fair website. For easy student browsing, the videos were categorized into four main endorsement areas: Public Service, Arts & Humanities; Business & Industry; or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). During the virtual fair, popular career highlights include a Nurse, Engineer, Special Effects Makeup Artist, and Medical Examiner. The website also has a section for students to submit “Thank You Cards” to the professionals.
“We are committed to helping our students achieve success beyond the academic setting. Bringing in career fair presenters opens up the working world to students on a broader basis,” said Anthony Defrancisis, DVMS Assistant Principal. “The Career Fair gives students an impartial and real idea of what a particular job is about. When the student realizes whether or not they are interested in a career, the school will be able to offer classes to support them in the future.”
The DVMS Spring Career Fair website is available through the first week of June at https://bit.ly/DVMSSttudentCareerFair2020.
