Del Valle High School (DVHS) teacher Victoria Longoria was named a finalist in the 2020 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, spotlighting her as one of the best educators in Texas. She was one of five secondary educators across the state of Texas to be named a finalist in the Secondary Education Lifetime Achievement category. The Lifetime Achievement Category salutes teachers with more than 20 years of experience.

Longoria, and finalists from all award categories, were honored with a virtual “Toast to Texas Teachers” ceremony on May 5, organized by the #TeachersCan initiative in celebration of National Teacher Appreciation Week. In preparation for the virtual event, H-E-B presented her with a sweepstakes check for $1,000 and a box filled with Cinco de Mayo themed swag including picado banners, maracas, festive glasses, confetti and more! The virtual event also included surprise appearances from Matthew McConaughey, Eva Longoria, Kendra Scott, and Matt Bonner.

Longoria, a 25-year teaching veteran, has spent a little over seven-years at DVHS inspiring students as an English Language Arts and Composition Teacher. In addition to being an H-E- B Excellence in Education Lifetime Achievement Award finalist (2020) and semi-finalist (2016), Longoria is a two-time Fullbright grant recipient, a Humanities Texas Outstanding Teacher, and taught abroad for several years during her tenure as an educator. She brings a compassionate and worldly perspective to her students that keeps them engaged in class.

When asked what Longoria does well as a teacher, one student responded with, “I can tell that she genuinely cares for her students, and that kind of love is very hard to find these days.” Another student remarked, “I look forward to coming to her class every morning for the sole reason that she is here, and I wouldn’t want to start the day any other way.”

About the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards

H-E-B launched the Excellence in Education Awards program in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators in 2002 as a positive way to support public education in Texas. The H-E-B Excellence in Education program is the largest monetary program for educators in the state, spotlighting best practices, and celebrating the passion and creativity of Texas educators.

H-E-B asks customers, Partners (employees) and community members to nominate teachers, principals, districts, early childhood facilities and school boards in Texas. Each nominee is sent an invitation to complete an application online and is asked about their professional experiences, educational philosophies and achievements both in and out of the classroom.
