Students in the Top 10 of the Del Valle High School Class of 2020 were recognized on May 1, with surprise visits to notify them of their class rank. With school buildings closed for the remainder of the academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremonial notification evolved into individual home visits. DVHS administrators coordinated with parents to make the visits possible.
Observing social distancing, administrators presented each student with a yard sign noting their status in the Top 10, graduation cords and stoles, and a cookie personalized with the student’s class rank. Many of the families added to the celebration with balloons, snacks, and more for their students.
“The Cardinal family is a proud group and no matter what the circumstances we will celebrate our students,” said DVHS Principal Joseph Welch, “Today we visited each of our Top 10 students to celebrate with them and their families. It was an honor and pleasure to share their special moment.
The entire Del Valle High School Class of 2020 will be honored with a virtual graduation in June. The school is exploring the possibility of an in-person graduation in August, dependent on local and state health guidelines.
The top 10 students are:
