For the employees and volunteers keeping meal service running during the District’s closure, School Lunch Hero Day came a day early this year. On May 1, Del Valle ISD (DVISD) celebrated the annual recognition with superhero costumes, treats, and visits by District leadership.

Sodexo, DVISD’s food service provider, donated a barbecue meal for honorees. District leadership provided cupcakes and words of thanks and inspiration to the dedicated school nutrition professionals who are superheroes for many students receiving meal services. Families waved and displayed thank-you signs during meal delivery and DVISD employees donned their favorite superhero outfits.

“It is wonderful that we can recognize our employees who arrive daily as early as 4:30 in the morning with the sole intention of ensuring that our kids are provided with meals,” said Director of Child Nutrition Services, “This truly is why we are DVProud.”

District leadership and board members honored transportation, maintenance, Child Nutrition Services, and the many staff who dedicate their time and talents to ensuring children in the DVISD community have a reliable source of healthy food. While closed, the District prepares 27,768 meals across five campuses every Thursday. This preparation results in three days of meals, or 16.2 tons of food and milk, being delivered to students before the weekend. Additionally, students in the community are provided with breakfast and lunch Monday through Wednesday. The combined total meals distributed during the closure totals over 300,000.

Meals are provided at campuses and on bus routes from 8-11 a.m. For more information, visit the DVISD web page or go to
