Ana Horton, the Hillcrest Elementary School librarian, recently had a story selected and published in Chicken Soup for the Soul’s It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas book. The book is a collection of more than 101 personal stories from Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s holidays.
Ms. Horton wrote her piece while attending a summer 2-week Abydos Literacy Learning training offered by DVISD. Part of the professional development session was a requirement to submit writing to a publisher for consideration. Her submission shares the story of her mother making tamales each year for Christmas.
Her published work earned her an invitation to the Latino Studies Department at UT Austin. After a faculty member read her story, she was invited to the department’s semester-ending celebration, Merry Merienda, to share her story with students as the keynote speaker.
“Ms. Horton’s work demonstrates her understanding of and connection to our students and their cultural experience,” said Jennifer Eberly, Hillcrest Elementary Principal.
