Three Del Valle High School band members were selected to audition for the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) All-State Area competition in January. The student musicians, Juan Castaneda, on euphonium, Jaden Brackmann, on trumpet, and Juan Diaz on contrabass clarinet, each qualified for the Area round of auditions after participating in the TMEA Region 18 audition process.
As part of their selection for the All-Region band, the trio from DVHS performed in the region concert in Austin on Saturday, December 7.
TMEA sponsors the All-State audition process to promote student dedication to musical knowledge and skills. During the auditions, musicians perform selected music individually for a panel of judges who assign them a ranking. The highest-ranked musicians are chosen to advance to the next level.
If selected during the All-State Area audition, the student musicians would qualify to perform in one of eight all-state bands or ensembles with students from across Texas at the 2020 TMEA Convention in San Antonio. Nearly 70,000 students participate in the TMEA All-State audition process annually.
“The three individuals have worked extremely hard at perfecting their craft, and it paid off for them during their auditions,” said Tom Guyton, the DVHS Band Director, “These musicians are a huge source of pride for our program.”
