Gabriela (Gabbi) Garcia, a Dailey Middle School Alumni and DVHS 2018 graduate, is using her experiences in Dell Med Summer Camps to fuel her drive to become a doctor. She is now a pre-med student working toward becoming a doctor to provide essential services to her community.
“I feel like a healthy community has the health they need nearby, I want to be that person,” Garcia said in a Dell Med video featuring her story. The video can be viewed below.
Her journey started in 2016 when Del Valle ISD and Dell Medical School began a partnership to identify 30 high school and 15 middle school students to participate in a free one-week summer camp at Dell Medical School. During the camp, students are engaged in relevant experiences to further their interest in medical professions. For high school students, the outreach continues with monthly activities at The University of Texas.
Students enrolled in this program gain valuable insights into the medical profession by working next to experience medical staff, including neurosurgeons, thoracic surgeons, and emergency room staff. Students also have a hands-on experience on the premier surgical robot in the world, the Davinci Surgical System.
