Gayla Ruiz, the kitchen manager at Collins Elementary School, was named the Sodexo Experience National Award Winner for the month of July. The award recognizes her work this summer offering our students nutritious meals through the Texas Farm Fresh Initiative while going above and beyond to ensure that the food looked appealing.

“Gayla is representative of the extraordinary people that work for Child Nutrition,” said Karen Kovach, Director of Child Nutrition. “Our team puts students first and it is wonderful to know they are recognized for their commitment. We are #DVProud!”

During a Texas Farm Fresh Tasting, Gayla interacted with students by going to each table to let students know there was a recipe for them to sample and led them to the sampling table. She discussed with them what Texas Farm Fresh was all about and the nutrition gained from eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Child Nutrition Services reports that participation in meals at Collins Elementary increased daily over the summer because of Gayla’s engagement with the students.
