Del Valle Middle School (DVMS) was awarded first place at District’s January 25 University Interscholastic League (UIL) academic tournament held at Ojeda Middle School. The DVMS UIL team brought home over 200 medals for students placing within the top six of their competition area.

In preparation for the UIL season, twenty-seven teachers and coaches worked with nearly 100 DVMS students helping them to find opportunities outside of the classroom to explore academic interests in a competitive arena.

“Our kids are absolutely fantastic and the academic coaches who help them are really dedicated,” said Mary Hopkins, DVMS UIL Academic Coordinator and librarian. “It is our goal to enter at least one student in every competition area, and at this event, we had students who placed in every competitive area!”

Students competed in individual or team competitions in various academic areas including Art Identification, Calculators, Chess, Dictionary, Editorial Writing, Impromptu Speaking, Listening Skills, Maps Charts & Graphs, Math, Modern Oratory, Music Memory, Number Sense, Oral Reading, Spanish Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Science, Social Studies, Spelling, and Production Art areas of 3-D Art, Drawing, Painting, and Miscellaneous Art.

This is the third consecutive year the DVMS UIL team has been awarded the champions trophy for earning first place in the competition.
