Chris Barton, the Austin-based author of “What Do you Do With a Voice Like That? The Story of Extraordinary Congresswoman Barbara Jordan,” recently spoke with all of the 4th and 5th graders at Hornsby-Dunlap Elementary School. During the visit, he read his book to the students and shared his love for writing with the students.  School librarian Johnnie Rhodes made the author visit possible.

Barton engaged with students by asking them questions about their natural talents and how they develop these talents. He took one student’s response to his question and crafted a story about the student on the spot. Mr. Barton also shared a message of perseverance, explaining that he received 23 rejections before he got a “yes” for his first book, emphasizing that success does not always come easy.

“His visit was important because I want our kids to see that hard work can pay off,” said school librarian Johnnie Rhodes, “Mr. Barton is special because he is a down to earth people person. He’s funny and smart, and he included the kids instead of only talking to them.”
