On Saturday, December 7, DVISD and the Junior League of Austin distributed a massive 2,500 new and gently worn winter coats to the youth of the Del Valle community during a special DVISD Coats for Kids event. The distribution at Del Valle Elementary School was in addition to the Junior League of Austin’s main event at Palmer Events Center in its 33rd year. The Coats for Kids program collects new and gently used coats for distribution to qualifying children each year.

Over 200 volunteers from Del Valle ISD and the community helped make the day possible by assisting families as they browse and select coats for their children. Volunteers included district staff, their families, DVISD alums, community members, Education Partners and elected officials Constable George Morales and Justice of the Peace Raúl Arturo González.

Prior to the event, volunteers from TRS joined district employees to unload trucks and organize the coats on racks.  Extra gratitude and recognition to the Maintenance and Facilities team and DVE PCL Adalia Nunez-Garcia. Also, special thanks to DVE’s Angie Rodgers, Rebeca Martell and Nikisha Lane who stayed with the Communications and Community Relations team until the end for clean up.

In addition to the Junior League of Austin, sponsors include Jack Brown Cleaners, 98.1 KVET, and KVUE. Del Valle ISD Curriculum and Instruction staff members complimented the event by providing grade-appropriate books to students and resources for parents.
