Recognition of Del Valle Middle School Counselors for CREST Award

For the third consecutive year, the Texas School Counselors Association recognized the Del Valle Middle School (DVMS) Counseling Program with the coveted CREST award for excellence during the 2018-2019 school year. Counselors Reinforcing Excellence in Texas (CREST) is a distinguished honor received by less than 100 school counseling programs each year from across the state in grades PK-12th. Schools receiving the CREST award demonstrated a commitment to using the school guidance and counseling program to improve the lives and achievement of students they serve in academic, career, personal and social domains. CREST looks at the counseling program in ten areas; principal support, counseling team, school climate and safety, student results, major achievements, community partnerships and resources, and parent collaboration.

Consider and Act on Full-Day Two-Way Dual Language Pre-K Pilot at Hillcrest Elementary for 2019-2020 School Year

The Board approved the Full-Day Two-Way Dual Language Pre-K Pilot at Hillcrest Elementary for 2019-2020 School Year.

Dr. Annette Villerot and Ray Prentice asked the Board to Consider and Act on Full-Day Two-Way Dual Language Pre-K Pilot at Hillcrest Elementary for 2019-2020 School Year.

According to data provided by E3 Alliance for the Central Texas area, 51% of students do not demonstrate kindergarten readiness as they enter kindergarten. However, students who attend a prekindergarten program are three times more likely to show kindergarten readiness, have fewer absences, and experience success on state standardized assessments at grade three. The state currently provides funding for half-day prekindergarten, which has been too cost-prohibitive for the district to consider piloting a full-day prekindergarten program. The City of Austin has proposed a partnership that will provide funding to pilot a full-day prekindergarten program at Hillcrest Elementary. This one-time funding would be used to open four additional prekindergarten classrooms, allowing the campus to also pilot a two-way dual language prekindergarten program (English and Spanish speaking students learning both language within the same classroom). The partnership would provide $16,000 for each prekindergarten classroom, totaling $64,000.

Consider and Act on Teacher Hiring Schedule for 2019-2020

The Board approved the Teacher Hiring Schedule for 2019-2020.

Dr. Tamey Williams-Hill asked the Board to consider and act on the Hiring Schedule for 2019-2020.

In an effort to provide prospective teacher hires with our 2019-2020 compensation information, the district requested Board approval of the 2019-2020 Teacher, Librarian, and RN hiring schedule. Adoption of the Teacher, Librarian, and RN hiring schedule at this time of the year will provide Del Valle I.S.D. an advantage over surrounding school districts and allow DVISD recruiters to communicate the most accurate salary information. As discussed at the Saturday, February 23rd Board Budget Workshop, the 2019-2020 Teacher, Librarian, and RN hiring schedule will reflect a $47,000 starting salary with each current step increasing by $1,000 from the previous hiring schedule.

Consider and Act on Revised Employee Contracts for 2019-2020

The Board approved the Revised Employee Contracts for 2019-2020.

Dr. Tamey Williams-Hill asked the Board to consider and act on the Revised Employee Contracts for 2019-2020.

In an effort to ensure our employment contracts contain the most recent and accurate language, the Human Resources Department asked Walsh, Gallegos, Trevino, Russo, and Kyle to review the language in our contracts. Upon review, the firm recommended that we remove obsolete information such as statements referring to the No Child Left Behind Act and remove redundant information such as when the contract refers to the Texas Education Code and a specific chapter that we do not have to list the specific provisions of the Code or Chapter within the contract.

Consider and Act on Amendment of Sodexo’s Contract for the 2019-2020 School Year

The Board approved the Amendment of Sodexo’s Contract for the 2019-2020 School Year.

Karen Kovach asked the Board to consider and act on the Amendment of Sodexo’s Contract for the 2019-2020 School Year.

In 2011, the USDA issued new guidelines concerning the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA) requiring school districts to renew contracts for their Child Nutrition programs. Sodexo is our current vendor for Food Service Management of our Child Nutrition program. As required by the new guidelines, DVISD bid out our food service management contract during March-April 2017. Sodexo’s proposal incorporated all new USDA requirements. The contract approved was for one year, with four (4) one-year renewal options (2017-2022). This is the second or our four renewals. The amendment shows fees for the Fixed Price Per Meal/Meal Equivalent at $1.6925. Last year’s price was $1.6544.

Consider and Act on Bond Planning Services from Excess Bond Funds

The Board approved the Bond Planning Services from Excess Bond Funds.

Bill Myers asked the Board to consider and act on Bond Planning Services from Excess Bond Funds.

On February 19, 2019, the Board approved O’Connell Robertson to lead a Bond Planning Committee. DVISD worked with O’Connell Robertson to negotiate the contract and received the proposal on March 4, 2019. This project budget total is for $40,000 including reimbursable expenses. Funds for this will be paid out of excess bond funds.
