The Del Valle High School varsity football squad teamed up with Red Bull Racing and the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) to practice, demonstrate and partake in American football drills with two of the world’s best Formula 1 (F1) racers on Thursday, Oct. 19.
Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, F1 racers sponsored by Red Bull Racing, put on pads, laced up their cleats and put on their customized Red Bull Racing helmets and uniforms to learn techniques about American football fundamentals from Del Valle High School’s varsity players and coaching staff.
“Del Valle was lucky to have two of the world’s best drivers come to participate in our football practice,” said Assistant Coach Adam Stagman. “It was amazing seeing these F1 racers transition to American football. You know an athlete when you see one.”
Some of the drills Ricciardo and Verstappen learned were warm-up exercises, kicking a field goal, running through tackles and jumping over obstacles, pass and catching routes and touchdown celebrations.
“It was cool seeing the comradery the players had and the constant energy they have,” Ricciardo said.
The practice was held at Veterans Memorial Stadium the day before the three-day U.S. Grand Prix event at COTA.
