The Del Valle Independent School District is a generous community, especially in times of need. Heartbreaking stories from the Texas Gulf Coast since Aug. 25th are prompting expressions of support among students, parents and residents who want to help displaced families. Many have asked if the school district or our campuses are collecting contributions or organizing other relief efforts. We are currently conducting a needs assessment to determine the best way to help incoming families and students. While no formal drives are being conducted at this time by the District, various Austin area organizations offer many ways to be involved.

The most effective way to support disaster survivors in their recovery is to donate money and time to trusted, reputable, voluntary or charitable organizations. The www.austintexas.gov/help website is a great resource to find more information about disaster assistance and recovery information. Cash donations offer voluntary agencies and faith-based organizations the most flexibility to address developing needs. With funding, these organizations can obtain needed resources nearer to the disaster location.

At this time, please do not donate or bring to campuses unsolicited goods, such as used clothing, miscellaneous household items, medicine or perishables.

Thank you for your willingness to ease the suffering of our Texas neighbors as we conduct our needs assessment. If Del Valle ISD determines that we need resources we will communicate those needs through our regular channels. Our thoughts go out to those who have been displaced during the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey and to the responders and volunteers who are selflessly giving of their time and talent.
